Visual Studio 2005 Out-of-memory exception

We’re still using VS Studio 2005 in a project for a customer (and I guess many others are as well) and frequently receives the out of memory exception while working. The solution is quite large, with a lot of files and many projects.

8fps on Nikon D300 without battery grip

The Nikon D300 supports 6fps without a battery grip and 8fps with a battery grip. However, it is possible to shot a burst of 9 shots with the rate of 8fps without a grip!

Do the following settings in the menu:

Custom settings menu -

c. Custom setting bank – Select a new bank, for instance B.
e. Bracketing/flash
- e5. Auto bracketing set = Flash only.
- e6. Auto bracketing mode = Flash only.
f. Controls
- f4. Assign Func button. Func button press = Bkt bracketing burst. Func button + dials = Bkt auto bracketing.

That’s all the settings, now hold down the Func button and change the right dial so the upper lcd shows 9F 1.0.

Then, set the left dial to S.

Finally set the Qual to Large (it does not work with Large + raw at the same time).

Then, hold down the Func button, press down the shutter half way to focus, and press all the way to fire away a burst of maximum 9 shots at 8fps!

Change product key for Microsoft Office 2010 after installation

If you want to change the product key for Office 10 after installation (like I wanted), you can do this by simply heading to Control Panel > Program and features. Select the office from the list and right click on it and select change. Select the “Enter a product key” option from the opened windows and enter the new product key here.

Commodore C64DTV version 1 hack

This is my C64DTV (30 games in a joystick that could be connected directly to the tv). It is a Commodore C64 emulator which easily could be modded.

I could not resist to include my Iphone with the C64 emulator in the photo as well…

My C64DTV Version 1 (NTSC) was modded to fit in a Commodore Datasette.

My hack/mod includes:

Two external joystick ports
IEC port (disk drive port) with power supply connector (i.e. +5V out)
PS/2 keyboard port
5V power supply with power switch
Reset button

Planned hacks/mods:

Joystick B up (C64DTV version 1 has all the connections for joystick B except up. This could be fixed by adding a logic circuit and so the keyboard send out a “1″ key press when the user moves the joystick up. The later versions of the dtv has a connection for joy B up on the pcb)
sd2iec (floppy drive emulator using an sd card)
S-video port

NOTE! I made a mistake in the solder points image, the Ground point under JOY A FIRE, isn’t really ground.

Any attached keyboard would not work due to timing issues, a really old AT keyboard or and old PS/2 is preferred. I have not yet got a keyboard to test this mod, but others have reported it to be successful.

To enter BASIC mode on the C64DTV, move the joystick left and right continously during boot up and select it from the new menu.

If you don’t have a keyboard, you could just hold down the fire button on the joystick, and a virtual keyboard would appear (in BASIC mode)!

Btw, the C64DTV is no longer produced, but you can occasionally buy one from E-bay (like I did)!

Unable to format USB memory stick “Lacie The key” after crash

My USB memory crashed totally during a file copy a while ago. The USB memory could not be formatted under Windows afterwards. I was able to recover all data with AESEUS Data Recovery (could be found on CNet). This was fixed by doing a low level format using HP’s “Hp disk format tool SP27608″. Now the memory works again.

Installing Itunes 10 on Windows server 2003

Well, Apple does not support installing Itunes on a W3k server, but it can be done anyway (I’m using it with my Iphone 3Gs). This is how I done (I got info on how from http://sites.google.com/site/yukichigai/iphonex64):

1. I’ve downloaded the latest .exe installer from apple.com
2. I’ve extracted the .exe using winrar to C:\Temp\iTunesSetup.
3. From here I first ran iTunes.msi, which installed without a hassle (I guess you have to install Quicktime first, I but already had it installed).
4. I then tried to run AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi (but I got an error message that “requires that your computer is running Windows XP SP2 or newer”).
5. I’ve downloaded Orca (from http://sites.google.com/site/yukichigai/Orca.msi?attredirects=0) and opened AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi in it. Here I changed LaunchCondition to: “(VersionNT=501 And ServicePackLevel>=2) Or VersionNT>=500″, saved the file and re-run AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi. This time it installed without any error messages.
6. Then I’ve started Itunes and everything worked ok!

I ran into some problems installing VGA driver on a ASUS G73J notebook. After a fresh installation of Windows 7 32 bit (not the supplied 64 bit), I tried to install the ATI driver from ATI (Mobility version 10.7 both the full package and only the display driver).

Skip to the end if you’re just interested in the solution…

I don’t know if this was wrong, maybe I should have tried the file on ASUS page first. Well, after first installing the whole package, the driver did not install. Then I tried to install the driver from Asus (Version V8.683.0.0), with the same result.

I also tried letting Windows search for it automatically, but that didn’t work. Then I tried to install it manually by using the “Have disk” option in control panel. That didn’t work for the ASUS driver, but it worked for the CL102494.inf file (from \Packages\Drivers\Display\W76A_INF catalogue, I don’t know if this is the correct one as it’s one more .inf in that folder that seems to work).

This now gave me a list of gpu’s to select from. However 6 different rows where listed for the Radion 5800 (but all hade the same name). I tried the first, and that did work.

I’ve checked inside the inf file, and there is only 3 listed rows (“ATI Radeon HD 5800 Series” = ati2mtag_Evergreen, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_6898

“ATI Radeon HD 5800 Series ” = ati2mtag_Evergreen, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_6899

“ATI Radeon HD 5800 Series ” = ati2mtag_Evergreen, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_689E), so I’m not sure I selected the correct one.

Solution:

Googling some more on the issue (check this post: http://www.overclockers.com/forums/showpost.php?p=6471741&postcount=4) I found out that you can edit the .inf install files yourself. Doing so on the unpacked files from version of the ATI mobility driver version 10.7, was successful. You’re supposed to edit both CL102494.inf and CW102494.inf (in the C:\ATI\Support\10-7_vista32_win7_32_dd\Packages\Drivers\Display\W7_INF folder). I added this line to them:

“ATI Radeon HD 5800 Series ASUS G73J” = ati2mtag_Evergreen, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_68A0

just above this line:

“ATI Radeon HD 5800 Series” = ati2mtag_Evergreen, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_6898

I got the device id (DEV_68A0) from the report generated when installing catalyst.

This was then manually installed by using the “Have disk” option in control panel (like above), and selecting the new “ATI Radeon HD 5800 Series ASUS G73J” entry in the list..

Hopefully ASUS and ATI releases a new driver soon without any problems…
