My backup solution at home

Well, today you have a lot of digital documents and photos that you does not want to lose because of a hard disk crash. This is my backup solution at home:

  • I store all my important documents and photos on a Synology NAS (that’s basically network connected harddisk). This NAS has two hard disks (at 1.5TB each), which is set to Raid-1 (the data is mirrored on the disk), so if one disk fails, the exact data is on the other disk.
  • I have a Windows server that has a local 1.5TB disk which is used for backup. The free software SyncBack Free copies data from the NAS to the local disk. SyncBack is setup to copy data weekly to the local disk (it can be setup to copy data monthly or daily as well).
  • I also have Crashplan setup on that Window server, which backups the data to the Crashplan online servers.

By doing all this, I have two copies of the same data stored on physically diffrent devices at home, which is also backuped online. If you want, you could use the add-on backup apps on the Synology NAS, but I really like the cheap and easy backup solution from Crashplan (but unfortionally they do not have a Sonology app yet). I went with my solution above since I already have a Windows server.
