Well, this can be done quite easily for a Windows VM like this:

– Run the command, here I increase it to 10GB (10 GB = 10752 megabytes):
VBoxManage modifyhd “D:\VirtualBox\my_disk-disk1.vdi” –resize 10752

This is from the help on the command:
VBoxManage modifyhd |
[–type normal|writethrough|immutable|shareable|
[–autoreset on|off]
[–resize |–resizebyte ]

You can just use computer management/disk management, right click on the partition and select ‘extend’ to extend the partition once you have used the VBox command line to make the disk larger, you don’t need any third party tools, this is now built into Windows (if you’re using Windows 7).

If you’re using an older version of Windows for your VM, then you can use this tool to expand the disk:
MiniTool Partion Wizard tool – http://www.partitionwizard.com/download.html

– Use MiniTool Partion Wizard tool to resize the partion (up to the unallocated new space).
