Archive for the ‘Ouya’ Category

Ouya is a pretty nice and inexpensive small Android based gaming console. It got some bad reputation when it was launched, but I still think it’s a great machine. The games that could be downloaded to the Ouya, is not a good as the latest XBOX nor Playstation games, but you really can’t expect that when the machine is so inexpensive.

I use my Ouya as a HTPC (running XBMC connected to a Synology Nas), and for running emulator games (works great with C64, Nes, Snes etc). For this, the Ouya works very well, however I wish it have even better hardware for running more advanced games (but I guess if Ouya survives, a newer version with more performance will probably be available).

One thing the Ouya lacks is the Google Play store, which could be added after rooting the Ouya and perform some steps, check out these links:

I first forgot one of the steps described in the second link above and was forced to do a factory reset of my Ouya (can be done via the System menu), after that I successfully added Google Play to my Ouya. However, Google Play seems to crash a lot, but I can still download and install whatever I want from it.

I tried to install Chrome browser from Google Play (as others reported should work fine on Ouya, but mine justs crash when trying to run), so I installed Dolphin browser instead, which works just fine.
I installed Nova launcher to my Ouya, which replaces the Ouya GUI with a more normal Android GUI.

I also attached a Bluetooth keyboard to my Ouya (I just plugged in and it works without any special installation). I can now use this when browsing the web or when searching for music in Spotify (Spotify also works well on Ouya).
