The new Windows Virtual PC (successor of Virtual PC 2007 for Windows 7) was painfully slow on my laptop. As a big fan of VPCs I just had to get it running smoothly!

It was solved by editing the Options.xml in Windows VPC. Options.xml could be found under:

C:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Virtual PC

The AppData is a system specific folder so it’s hidden by default, but you can still access it even if you do not see it (just enter the name)! Do as follows:

1. Shut down all opened VPCs.

2. Take a copy of the original file (always good to do so you can revert your changes easily).

3. Add the “enable idle thread” under the “virtual_machines” node, like:

<enable_idle_thread type=”boolean”>true</enable_idle_thread>

3. Start any VPC and it works just fine and smooth!
